Staking

Every traveler pays the ferryman. Stake HYPE in the exit pool and the tolls are yours.

The exit pool on HyperEVM holds the HYPE that CHARON fronts to travelers, and stakers supply it. Each crossing comes back to the pool when its standard withdrawal settles, carrying a 1% toll. Tolls reach stakers through OBOL.

Stake

Call stake() on the exit pool with HYPE. You receive OBOL at the current exchange rate:

OBOL received = HYPE staked ÷ exchange rate

At genesis the rate is 1 HYPE per OBOL.

Earn

There is nothing to claim. Tolls vest into the pool in a straight line over the toll vesting period, and the OBOL exchange rate rises as they vest:

exchange rate = pool assets ÷ OBOL supply
pool assets = idle HYPE + HYPE on the river − unvested tolls − queued unstakes
  • Idle HYPE is ready to front the next crossing.
  • HYPE on the river has been fronted and is waiting for its standard withdrawal to settle.
  • Unvested tolls are the part of each in-flight toll that hasn't vested yet.
  • Queued unstakes are HYPE owed to unstake tickets. Their OBOL is already burned, so they no longer count toward the pool.

Your OBOL balance doesn't change. What each OBOL redeems for moves with pool assets: tolls raise it, and a pool loss lowers it. The full walkthrough is in Tokenomics.

Unstake

Call unstake(shares) to burn OBOL for HYPE at the current exchange rate. There is no lockup.

  • Paid now: the part that idle liquidity covers, after HYPE already reserved for queued unstakes.
  • Queued: the rest becomes an unstake ticket. Tickets fill in order as settlements land, and the pool fills the queue from incoming settlements before it fronts any new crossing. A filled ticket is claimed with claim(ticketId).

A queued unstake is repaid from HYPE already on the river, so it doesn't depend on new stakers arriving. The stake page shows your tickets and how much of each is filled.

What drives the toll

tolls = 1% × crossing volume

Each HYPE in the pool fronts one crossing, then waits on the river until that crossing settles. So a pool's daily capacity is roughly its size divided by the settlement window in days. Tolls follow crossing volume, which the app reports live. There is no fixed return.

Pool status

The pool status page reads the exit pool directly and shows:

  • Pool size: total pool assets.
  • 24h crossings: count and volume over the last 24 hours, from the pool's hourly ledger.
  • Average crossing time: deposit to payout, from on-chain timestamps that the escrow verifies.
  • Liquidity split: idle HYPE, HYPE on the river, unvested tolls, and the OBOL exchange rate.
  • Limits: per-crossing cap, hourly cap and current outflow, the settlement window, and whether ferrying is paused.

The tiles show chain state only. Until a network's pool is funded, its tiles read zero.

Risks

Stakers carry the ferry's risk: the ferryman key, pool depth, sequencer liveness, late confirmations, the canonical bridge, and smart contract bugs. Any of them, if it causes a loss, lowers the OBOL exchange rate. Read Risks before you stake.
